What if by some twisted act of Karma, Kevin Clifton starts up a new relationship with his next celebrity pairing on Strictly Come Dancing, while his current squeeze and former dance partner, Stacey Dooley can only slow clap along in the audience hoping she’s not detecting what she thinks she’s detecting?
I mean, it’s not beyond the realms of possibility is it? Considering Clifton’s form on top of three broken marriages at just 36.
It’s the partners in the audience I always feel most sorry for, having to put on a brave face for the cameras, in front of millions of viewers, hoping against hope, they won’t be the next victim of the infamous Strictly Curse. You can see the discomfort in their faces.
It turns out Clifton’s contract means he has to be paired with a celebrity for the next series of Strictly Come Dancing on BBC One whereas his colleague Katya Jones will be relegated to backing dancer, if that, as punishment for her pub snog with former contestant and comedian Seann Walsh.
Boo hoo. Not fair. Not that I particularly feel sorry for Katya Jones, it’s her husband and fellow dancing pro Neil Jones who has had to bare the most embarrassment publicly. He’s taken it like a pro too.
Now that BBC producers are apparently coming down hard on celebrity/pro-dancer romances, you know it will only make the forbidden fruit more enticing. We’ve all watched Dirty Dancing. We get it. Nobody puts Baby in the corner.
We’ve all drank from the pleasure cup that was Johnny and Baby finally getting it on after all the sexual tension.
How can Strictly stop more romance on set? They could hire a parish priest to make sure the dancers don’t get too close like those GAA discos of my youth. Although that never seemed to work either.
The Irish incarnation of the show, RTE’s ratings hit Dancing with the Stars, has also brought plenty of sequinned pairings, two in particular that seem to be defying the odds. Irish supermodel Thalia Heffernan and pro dancer Ryan McShane celebrated two years together in January with the model posting on Instagram:
“Thank you for 762 days of joy, laughter and love. You’ve reminded me that happiness can almost be a constant state of being”.
The couple are close friends with Katya and Neil Jones, with McShane acting as best man at their wedding. Speaking about that pub snog, McShane said,
‘‘It can happen anywhere but the show is a pressure cooker. It’s an escape from life’.
Two more who couldn’t keep it strictly professional are singer Jake Carter and dancing pro Karen Byrne who had been in a long-term relationship with fellow dancer Wojtek Potaszkin.
The season two winners looked close at last week’s Peter Mark Style Awards at the Marker Hotel, going so far as to say they’ve never had an argument. And who could argue with that? Young love looks so lovely. It’s just, you know, the Strictly exes, it can’t have been easy. And then there’s Kevin Clifton who’s antics would make you wonder about the whole circus. Tread cautiously Stacey!
